I’m a giant fan of Mediabistro’s GalleyCat and think they’re doing a great job of providing resources for writers, authors, and idea-thinker uppers in regard to Web 2.0 tools.

Their latest piece titled, “The Most Popular Book Reviewers On Twitter” by Jason Boog is something you should definitely read and take actionable insight from!

What insight?

The column gives you some top Reviewers on Twitter, two of my faves being Susanna K. Hutcheson (top Amazon reviewer too) and my friend Wayne Hurlbert of BlogTalkRadio’s Blog Business Success. They also give you some good hashtags for Twitter that you can search to find new book reviewers to pitch.

I think you might have to be a member of MediaBistro to get GalleyCat content, but if you do then I encourage you to join MediaBistro. It’s one of my favorite sites for writers and incredibly uplifting on a daily basis with new resources and kicks in the writers’ block butt!

Go now go and twitter pitch your book! You CAN DO IT!

A new search engine has launched today and my prediction is that it just might rival Google’s in a couple of years time. The search engine was created by Anna Patterson.

Here’s an excerpt from the article, “Anna Patterson’s last Internet search engine was so impressive that industry leader Google Inc. bought the technology in 2004 to upgrade its own system.

She believes her latest invention is even more valuable – only this time it’s not for sale.

Patterson instead intends to upstage Google, which she quit in 2006 to develop a more comprehensive and efficient way to scour the Internet.”

I had to laugh at the quote from a Gartner analyst, “Search has become as much about branding as anything else,” Weiner said. “I doubt [Cuil] will be keeping anyone at Google awake at night.”

While search is about branding, it’s also about users wanting improved search capabilities, and if Cuil ends up giving users a better way to search and retrieve then it might just keep those Google guys up a night too.

Anna worked for Google so it will really be exciting to see long-term how this plays out.

I tried it this morning and I like how it presents the searches in more of a magazine/newspaper layout as noted by the article as well.

I’m always amazed and humbled by my Mom and I’m so grateful for her frankness, honesty and insight. So this friday as an homage to Mom, I’m going to share an excerpt from an email she sent to me after listening to my interview with Wayne Hurlbert last night on books and PR.

I’m sharing it because it has some great things to be aware of in terms of doing interviews whether they be online or offline. The big message…watch those ums!

So here’s the excerpt:

“You have an authoritative voice, with passion showing in it, and you obviously know your field….the experience shows in the answers to the questions. The only constructive evaluation (and this one comes from my days as part of an executive Toastmasters group), would be to say, watch those “ums”, they weaken what you are saying and are a sign of nervousness. There were 15 “ums” prior to the great story about interviewing Salman Rushdie (sp.). You have a great voice (I heard no Texas Twang) for any kind of public speaking. As you went on answering questions, the “ums” began disappearing so I know nervousness was a part of it. There is no reason to be at all nervous, you know “whereof you speak”.”

My mom is a reading teacher in Dallas, very Internet savvy and of course right on in terms of the ums!

I spend a considerable amount of time convincing my authors to get connected to peers on LinkedIn and not be overwhelmed by what they presume is “new-fangled” technology that they can’t use.

Hogwash! LinkedIn is easy, free and it’s a powerful way to build your community of trusted, authentic and hardworking peers.

To quote Hillary “It takes a village,” and if you think of LinkedIn and your connections as your village, you’ll be amazed at how your networking, peer linking and opportunities will raise your village’s profile and at the same time provide a good deal of support for your endeavors and outreach.

Now go to LINKEDIN!

Remember: Consumers come first, honesty isn’t optional, and deception is always exposed.

For more information, visit www.womma.org/ethics.

——————————————————————————–

I will always be truthful and will never knowingly relay false information. I will never ask someone else to deceive bloggers for me.
I will fully disclose who I am and who I work for (my identity and affiliations) from the very first encounter when communicating with bloggers or commenting on blogs.
I will never take action contrary to the boundaries set by bloggers. I will respect all community guidelines regarding posting messages and comments.
I will never ask bloggers to lie for me.
I will use extreme care when communicating with minors or blogs intended to be read by minors.
I will not manipulate advertising or affiliate programs to impact blogger income.
I will not use automated systems for posting comments or distributing information.
I understand that compensating bloggers may give the appearance of a conflict of interest, and I will therefore fully disclose any and all compensation or incentives.
I understand that if I send bloggers products for review, they are not obligated to comment on them. Bloggers can return products at their own discretion.
If bloggers write about products I send them, I will proactively ask them to disclose the products source.

For those of you who really want to get some great resource material on how to effectively tap into the advantages that being on the Web give you, I highly recommend this report by Brian Clarke of Copyblogger.com and Tony Clarke

And believe me it’s not an infomercial report, I’ve downloaded it and it’s excellent. Plus I love that the authors worked in NASA, the Sex Pistols and Marshal McLuhan.

My favorite McLuhan quote by the way is, “Politics offers yesterday’s answers to today’s questions.”

So go and read the report and see if it inspires you! (No affiliate fees are given in this recommendation, nor did Brian even buy me a virtual java to tout the report.)

I’m on the tail end of celebrating Banned Books Weeks by reading all those banned books! So now I encourage you to read them as well. Here is a full press release about the top banned books in 2006. Please go buy them.

The Most Frequently Challenged Books of 2006
The following books were the most frequently challenged in 2006:

The ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom received a total of 546 challenges last year. A challenge is defined as a formal, written complaint, filed with a library or school requesting that materials be removed because of content or appropriateness. According to Judith F. Krug, director of the Office for Intellectual Freedom, the number of challenges reflects only incidents reported, and for each reported, four or five remain unreported.

The “10 Most Challenged Books of 2006” reflect a range of themes, and consist of the following titles:

“And Tango Makes Three” by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell
“Gossip Girls” series by Cecily Von Ziegesar \
“Alice” series by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor
“The Earth, My Butt, and Other Big Round Things” by Carolyn Mackler
“The Bluest Eye” by Toni Morrison
“Scary Stories” series by Alvin Schwartz
“Athletic Shorts” by Chris Crutcher
“The Perks of Being a Wallflower” by Stephen Chbosky
“Beloved” by Toni Morrison
“The Chocolate War” by Robert Cormier

Off the list this year, but on for several years past, are the “Catcher in the Rye” by J.D. Salinger, “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck and “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” by Mark Twain.

And I will tell you that one of my favorite books of all time is “Boy’s Life” by Robert McCammon and that book has been on several banned lists. Ridiculous. Here’s a letter McCammon read to a school board about his book.
