I’m really humbled and thrilled today as one of my favorite clients, Joe Camp (father of Benji the dog) had his book – “Soul of A Horse” hit #4 on the Dallas, TX non-fiction bestseller lists! Very cool as it’s representative of how a book can rise to the top city by city. So don’t get discouraged if your book hasn’t hit #1 in the nation, look to each city to drive it forth! Joe’s book is now in its 4th printing! Go Joe. And here’s a wonderful feature that Daryn Kagan (past CNN anchor) did about Joe and his amazing horse.

Oftentimes when one first starts blogging they throw “everything in but the kitchen sink”, and often that’s really too much for a blog. And it’s too much for a first time blogger as well to keep up with in terms of generating new and timely content.

A good blog is a two-way conversation and serves to enlighten folks about what you’re doing, what interests you and how they can learn something from it. Too much content is not king, rather it’s deadly in terms of posting two page treatises every time you blog.

If you can’t say something evocative, edu-focused and engaging in the first four paragraphs then don’t say it at all. This specifically refers to more author-focused blogs because although I don’t write blogs for people, I do help authors in terms of fine-tuning their blog focus and finding like-minded bloggers to learn from.

And now I’m on the 4th paragraph! I won’t talk about my kid’s day at school, what color my office is, what color my parachute is, and what my pug Willie left on the floor last night. I will give you one tip to sum this up, “Think bigger than you when you blog.” Highlight other bloggers that you enjoy, take a link or two from a major news story and give your thoughts on it, write 5 tips that anyone can utilize to improve their business, lives or service.

As I was reading Dr. Seuss’ "Oh the Places You’ll Go" to my six year old son last night, I was struck again by how much of that book relates to our lives and to our businesses.

How many of us fall into a "waiting place" and neglect to pro-actively move forward, whether it be in reaching out to new potential customers, shining up our brand and messaging, or even just waiting till business is "better" to update our web site or direct marketing collateral?

"…Waiting for the fish to bite, or waiting for wind to fly a kite, or waiting around for Friday night, or waiting, perhaps, for their Uncle Jake or a pot to boil, or a Better Break or a string of pearls, or a pair of pants, or a wig with curls, or Another Chance. Everyone is just waiting. NO! That’s not for you!" (Oh, the Places You’ll Go – Dr. Seuss)

Are you so busy "waiting" that you’re missing opportunities in your business or your life to get on the road with new customers or new initiatives or finding as Seuss calls them "…the bright places where Boom Bands are playing."

If so, stop waiting for another chance or a Better Break and create those yourself. Right now, I have more clients than I’ve ever had in my entire career, and I truly think it is directly due to the fact that I stopped waiting and started moving.

"…and remember that Life’s a Great Balancing Act. Just never forget to be dexterous and deft. And never mix up your right foot with your left." (Seuss)
