Ok, I’m working too hard! I missed blogging about Equal Pay Day this year, although I did remember to wear red that day! I’m a big supporter of equal pay of course. The other thing I’m just as activist about is that women and men don’t make business their whole lives. In honor of that, I will post a still very insightful song in terms of what can happen if it’s only ever all about making the money.

I’ve loved this song since I was a kid and my parents would play Ray Stevens during their neighborhood dinner parties. And while the song is titled, "Mr. Businessman", in this day and age it could be just as easily titled "Ms. Businesswoman".

And I’ve got to say this would have made for a great background song for the Enron documentary.

Let it be a reminder that despite what the world may tell us, life can be extraordinarily rewarding and good if you just take the time to "smell the roses" too.

I also truly believe that with the continued demand for real and honest communication online and offline grows, so to does the need lessen for material wealth and riches to be our only definers.

Mr Businessman Lyrics
Artist: Ray Stevens

Itemize the things you covet
As you squander through your life
Bigger cars, bigger houses
Term insurance for your wife
Tuesday evenings with your harlot
And on Wednesdays it’s your charlatan
analyst, he’s high upon your list

You’ve got air conditioned sinuses
And dark disturbing doubts about religion
And you keep those cards and letters going out
While your secretary’s tempting you
Your morals are exempting you from guilt and shame
Heaven knows you’re not to blame

(CHORUS:)
You better, Take care of business Mr. Businessman
What’s your plan?
Get down to business Mr. Businessman if you can
(Before it’s too late and you throw your life away) 1st time

Did you see your children growing up today
And did you hear the music of their laughter
As they set about to play
Did you catch the fragrance of those roses in your garden
Did the morning sunlight warm your soul,
Brighten up your day
Do you qualify to be alive
or is the limit of your senses so as only to survive
Hey yeah…..

Spending counterfeit incentive
Wasting precious time and health
Placing value on the worthless
Disregarding priceless wealth
You can wheel and deal the best of them
And steal it from the rest of them
You know the score, their ethics are a bore

Eighty-six anesthetic crutches prop you to the top
Where the smiles are all synthetic
And the ulcers never stop
When they take that final inventory,
Yours will be the same sad story everywhere
No one will really care, no one more lonely than
This rich important man, let’s have your autograph
Endorse your epitaph

This week, I had the great pleasure of talking to an award-winning photographer today about how to stay inspired as an artist and I had the wonderful opportunity to see Isabelle Allende speak about writing as a revolution.

Why is it important to you?

Because many of us, somehow become stuck in our profession or what we’re doing or misconceptions we hold about what the best ways are of doing it.

As a writer and a publicist, I can tell you that one of the keys to my staying inspired is my deep belief that living life to its fullest is a revolution. Stop treating your life as an unappreciated pasttime and start taking steps to create what it is you want to be creating.

If you’re a writer, create another work of fiction, non-fiction, compelling blog post or whatever can spark more creativity.

If you’re a book author – create more content from your book. Don’t think you’re ever done when the last page is written -espescially in writing business books. Keep your book and your message dynamic. Be constantly engaging new thought around it!

When I get stuck – I look at a wall in my office filled with pictures of creative people and that inspires me to do more. In our country, we’re so blessed with "too much" that we often forget to strive for more. There’s a very famous author that once said winnning the Pulitzer Prize was a terrible thing because it made him stop yearning for more in his work. It stultified his drive.

Don’t let that happen to you. Always yearn for more, create more and have a passion for more.

Don’t be lazy – don’t be satisfied – don’t be comfortable – don’t meet the status quo.

"Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out our own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” (Steve Jobs)

This relates directly to messaging as well. Does everyone at your company really understand what the company does and what they are providing? If they don’t, then how can they be expected to sell the company and its offerings?

Teach! Share your wisdom. Don’t operate from scarcity within your business.

"You should teach internally as well. Do you know why nobody else at your shop gets it? – because you keep it to yourself. At least once or twice a month you should have an internal seminar and teach everyone in the firm something about what you do, or how you sell.

And when you’ve done that – teach your clients, vendors, and associates how to teach. You do that and selling your ideas will get really easy." (Duct Tape Marketing Blog)

"Print Death for Life, But Photos Live On(line)
Time Inc.’s umpteenth experiment with the brand called Life — you know, formerly the most successful magazine in the world, until television came along — ended in failure yesterday, as these experiments always do. The newspaper insert version of the magazine was closed on Monday after bleeding money for three years." (Media Bistro)

Here’s the sad thing about Life being shuttered – it was for years one of the most illuminating and dynamic publications to read and more importantly it fostered a remarkable connection to one another.

At the end of the day what social networking, Web 2.0, marketing, wikis, public relations, success stories etc. really should all lead to is the same place – a conversation with a prospect to exchange something meaningful that benefits both entities.

With the celebrity glitterati magazines and the rush to make news at any cost – we’ve lost some of the fundamental part of authenticity that it takes to make that conversation in print, online or in person real.

Life had honest, often startling pictures about real people doing real things. One of my own most beloved heroes Margaret Bourke-White made her fame shooting photographs for the magazine and went on to have her own surgery shot by another famed photographer and put into Life magazine by the editors.

I disagree that Life failed. And I urge you to make it your experiment to not fail in being authentic and real each and every time you have the opportunity.

NEW YORK _ Today’s college students are more narcissistic and self-centered than their predecessors, according to a comprehensive new study by five psychologists who worry that the trend could be harmful to personal relationships and American society.

"We need to stop endlessly repeating ‘You’re special’ and having children repeat that back," said the study’s lead author, Professor Jean Twenge of San Diego State University. "Kids are self-centered enough already."

Here’s a link to the full story.

And as a Mom of a six year old son and a ten year old daughter, I find it a bit apalling that the lead author is quoted as saying, "Kids are self-centered enough already."

Kids are kids and if you look at all the messaging directed to them in the form of productizing their lives – that would be a more interesting study then having your call to action from the study be, "Stop endlessly repeating "you’re special." The way Professor Twenge describes it sounds a bit more like brainwashing than good kid and parental interaction.

The harmful trend in studies is how more and more studies are based on the "result" the "study leaders" already have in mind that they want to attain.

How can I relate that to PR? Good question Watson! Here’s how:

Journalists are studying your company – many of them already have their "resultant" story in mind even as they are interviewing you or coming (god forbid) to your hour long briefing via the Internet. So the key is to study the journalists and what they write and be prepared to respond to any "hooks" they might drop in the conversation to make "their" story turn out better. Frankly, it shows some respect to journalists too if you take the time to read what they write prior to an interview. Most of them follow some sort of style and you can learn how to best be responsive to what they ask, by "studying" old stories they’ve written.

And I guess if you really wanted to make them feel good you could keep repeating to them "You’re special" and ask if they’ll repeat that back to you during the interview. (that’s a joke folks.:>)
