Too Big for Your Blog Britches?

On August 4, 2008, in Blogs, Online Outreach, by Nettie Hartsock

big-pants.jpgGrowing up with Southern great-aunts one of the phrases most often heard was, “Are you getting to big for your britches?”, and lately I’ve been thinking that phrase might also be applied to folks who blog and want everyone else to read their blog but never take the time or inclination to read anyone else’s work.

Take this test to see if you’re too big for your blog britches and if you are then change your “blog operandi” and get back to the community! (note: the more answers on the Yes side, the more you might want to check your blog britches.)

Are you Too Big for Your Blog Britches?

1. I blog but don’t feel the need to ever link to any other bloggers because they’re not as uber-smart as I am so what good is it.

Yes or No?

2. I don’t think it’s really necessary to have a blogroll that highlights other blogs I read because like I said, “I don’t READ any other blogs but my own.”

Yes or No?

3. I want my book to be pitched to a ton of online sites and blogs but I don’t want to have to read those blogs or try to engage them other than they should really feature my BOOK and then I might read the post they do on my book specifically.

Yes or No?

4. I only want to be featured on the very best blogs, but I don’t know what those are, I just know that I’m smarter than the ones out there and if they just knew about my book or my blog, they would gladly feature me.

Yes or No?

5. My plan doesn’t include reaching out to any other bloggers because if I can’t quantify a book sale immediately with my efforts I’m not making the effort at all.

Yes or No?

6. I know what the term “Web footprint” means and I’m willing to take time to build mine and reach out to like-minded and brilliant folks online.

Yes or No?

7. I’m already a very well-known writer, why should I have to reach out to other bloggers? They should be glad to feature me because I’m so famous.

Yes or No?

8. I’m willing to blog with full transparency and not snarkily, or with full press marketing messaging.

Yes or No?
