Nettie – This is serious food for thought and questions that I have been muddling through myself.
1-6, 8, and 10 are daily practices for me. You are right on in stating their importance.
9 – Oh I wish! My folks read my blogs…I wish they would comment. They have always kept me on my toes and I would sure appreciate that now. Maybe it would help with #7.
The blogosphere is ripe with great ideas and awesome talent. It takes getting up really early in the morning to pull this on off…even then I think I accomplish it about half the time.
Thanks for the thoughts!
Hi April,
Thanks so much for taking the time to comment! As you know that means a great deal to a blogger and I’m really glad this post resonated with you. I also checked out your blog and it looks great and is very engaging. I like your conversational writing style!
One tip that helps me occasionally get people to comment is to ask a question at the end of a blog post.
Sometimes that’ll get em going!
This is a very strong list. I like it, need to practice some more of these myself.
Hi Geoff,
thank you but I actually think you practice those above pretty amazingly on your blog!

Nettie,
Great list. Comment and collaborate! I need to do that more. I need to write more often, too! You are still my blogging guru, but as you advise, I’m out there looking for and reading others, too.

#3 is a big help to me, and well put, echoing JFK. This points me toward further evolution of my blog from an essentially private journal to a real conversation with readers. I blog (and podcast and write poetry) to express myself, yes. But there is a subtle difference between self-expression trapped in the small Kingdom of Me and expression of my unique voice helping to sing the Song of Humanity. Thanks for your sensible and clear list!

I like #10 a lot. I blog about communication as well, and I often spend a bit of extra time with my posts to ask myself if I’m taking my own advice.
A short but great post! My father comments on my blog. Great list, I’ll try to keep these in mind!
Thanks Grace! I appreciate all of you commenting on this list as well and highlighting it. It makes me happy that it was so helpful to folks!

My dad tells me every time I talk to him that he’s been reading my blog, and asks if that’s okay. He doesn’t typically comment, but simply knowing that someone I care deeply about is reading my every word does add a different level of perspective to what I do. I love it. Great tips. Thanks!
11. Read as many books as you read blogs.
Hi Tiffany,
thanks for the note on your Dad. My mom reads all my blogs and comments on them and it helps her keep up with what I do too.
