Blogging for Music

On May 14, 2007, in Blogs, by Nettie Hartsock

There is an extraordinary story called "Sex, Drugs and Updating Your Blog" on music and blogging in the New York Times Magazine. The online link is here but hurry because they take these stories down after a couple of days. As a music and author publicist, I can tell you that every one of my clients is being sent this article as a link so they understand how amazing the blogosphere is and how it can impact you and all that you can do.

Not only that, but read the story because it will also help you understand how blogs can be amazing tools for creation and how you can use them to stay inspired and inspire others!

Another 5 things from Jim Logan

On May 10, 2007, in Business Advice, by Nettie Hartsock

My friend Jim Logan did a great post also for Darren Rowse’s brainchild and here’s the link.

1. “I’m a Recovered Politician. I’m on Step 9. You win some, you lose some and then there’s that little known 3rd category.”

2. “Glaciers could really care less about politics, they just either freeze or they melt.”

3. “The answer to global warming is to colonize other planets? We couldn’t even evacuate New Orleans.”

4. “Will all these warnings be ignored because they’re inconvenient?”

5. “Don’t tell me we can’t solve the global warming crisis. We could take one week’s of expenditure on Iraq and solve the crisis.”

* Stay tuned for more.  This top 5 post is because I’m participating in Darren Rowse’s brainchild “Top 5″ group writing project and I’m lucky enough to be doing it from the fantastic PDF2007 conference where today Al Gore was the keynote.

On writing for blogs

On May 7, 2007, in Blogs, by Nettie Hartsock

Here are my favorite things about writing a blog:

1. Instantaneous gratification after you’ve finished a post.

2. No writers’ block allowed or "blog block." If you don’t have something to blog about – then take time out to thank or link to all those other peer blogs who inspire you.

3. Freedom from an editor or story slant – although note, this never means your blog should be sloppy and not congruent.

4. E-meeting tons of other bloggers who are supportive and active in the blogosphere

5. Reaching out to potential readers and establishing a rapport.

6. Interviewing other bloggers

7. Writing anything keeps you creative and focused. It’s too easy as a writer, to get lazy and not challenge yourself. Writing blogs keeps you challenged!

8. Hoping someone will comment on your blog. (Someone…anyone…Mom?)

9. Getting feedback that you’re on the right track and you’re helping folks view the world at a better vantage point.

10. Blog carnivals – they’re fun and festive and you get to meet other like-minded folks!

Ted Demopolous’ little purple book

On May 3, 2007, in Blogs, by Nettie Hartsock

I think Ted Demopolous is smart! And he just sent me what I will now refer to as "the little purple book" which is in essence all the brain candy on blogging reduced to a highly functional and packaged "little purple book."

The book "101+ Tips for Blogging More Efficiently, Effectively and Profitability: Secrets of Successful Blogging" is a pint-size (did I mentiona purple) power-paged font of information.

Order it, read it, put it on your desk and use it! And by way of full disclosure, I’m not working for Ted, with Ted, or on behalf of an affiliate fee, I just like the darn book and think you might too!

It’s for sale at http://www.demop.com/store/secrets.html as well as on Amazon.

Ted is also recording 3 CDs of audio to accompany it that he says will be done soon.

Equal Pay day

On May 3, 2007, in General, by Nettie Hartsock

Ok, I’m working too hard! I missed blogging about Equal Pay Day this year, although I did remember to wear red that day! I’m a big supporter of equal pay of course. The other thing I’m just as activist about is that women and men don’t make business their whole lives. In honor of that, I will post a still very insightful song in terms of what can happen if it’s only ever all about making the money.

I’ve loved this song since I was a kid and my parents would play Ray Stevens during their neighborhood dinner parties. And while the song is titled, "Mr. Businessman", in this day and age it could be just as easily titled "Ms. Businesswoman".

And I’ve got to say this would have made for a great background song for the Enron documentary.

Let it be a reminder that despite what the world may tell us, life can be extraordinarily rewarding and good if you just take the time to "smell the roses" too.

I also truly believe that with the continued demand for real and honest communication online and offline grows, so to does the need lessen for material wealth and riches to be our only definers.

Mr Businessman Lyrics
Artist: Ray Stevens

Itemize the things you covet
As you squander through your life
Bigger cars, bigger houses
Term insurance for your wife
Tuesday evenings with your harlot
And on Wednesdays it’s your charlatan
analyst, he’s high upon your list

You’ve got air conditioned sinuses
And dark disturbing doubts about religion
And you keep those cards and letters going out
While your secretary’s tempting you
Your morals are exempting you from guilt and shame
Heaven knows you’re not to blame

(CHORUS:)
You better, Take care of business Mr. Businessman
What’s your plan?
Get down to business Mr. Businessman if you can
(Before it’s too late and you throw your life away) 1st time

Did you see your children growing up today
And did you hear the music of their laughter
As they set about to play
Did you catch the fragrance of those roses in your garden
Did the morning sunlight warm your soul,
Brighten up your day
Do you qualify to be alive
or is the limit of your senses so as only to survive
Hey yeah…..

Spending counterfeit incentive
Wasting precious time and health
Placing value on the worthless
Disregarding priceless wealth
You can wheel and deal the best of them
And steal it from the rest of them
You know the score, their ethics are a bore

Eighty-six anesthetic crutches prop you to the top
Where the smiles are all synthetic
And the ulcers never stop
When they take that final inventory,
Yours will be the same sad story everywhere
No one will really care, no one more lonely than
This rich important man, let’s have your autograph
Endorse your epitaph

Blogtipping Albeit Late

On May 2, 2007, in Blogs, by Nettie Hartsock

Ok! I’m late on celebrating the official one year anniversary of Easton Ellsworth’s amazing blogtipping revolution! But so it goes.

Blogtipping

I’m not too late to Blogtip however so here are three I’m crazy about currently and a few suggestions:

Lois Kelly’s blog – is funny, energetic and insightful. Chock full of good tips for "word-of-mouth" marketing and suberb engaging conversational style.

Tip: Where’s a picture of Lois? Would love to see one on the page by the blog!

Marcia Hoeck’s Meaningful Marketing blog - I loved the post on beehiving. Marcia always has a new take for old and new marketers and the great thing is her blog lives up to its name by being evocative, meaningful and marketing-focused.

Tip: Categorize your blog posts so when you write a book – you’ll be all set with chapter headers!

Crawford Kilian’s Writing for the Web 3.0 Blog - I cannot say enough good things about this blog and its focus. It’s full of resources and Kilian is a very seasoned and inspiring writer. I read it all the time to remind myself how long a writer’s life can be and how you constantly must re-engage, reimagine and reinvigorate your writing purpose! Kilian’s blog feeds the writer’s mind!

Go to the link below and read his article too on Mark Twain -http://thetyee.ca/Books/2007/01/08/MarkTwain/ – see his take on whether Mark Twain invented the internet. (Samuel Clemens – of whom I’m distantly and gratefully related to.)

Tip: No tips! Just that I hope he keeps blogging and teaching!
